I have no affiliation with Ancestry.com, but I do have a lot of customer satisfaction. They currently have DNA kits on sale for $59, and their US membership, which would give you the opportunity to search all their domestic US records, is on sale for $79 for 6 months, down from $99 for the same product. You can find these offers at http://www.ancestry.com .
If you do happen to get a DNA kit from them, and your are a descendant of CE South, consider linking your kit to the CE South Family Tree. If you will email me at popeda@gmail.com I'll arrange a time with you to walk you through that by phone. If you'd like, I can also begin to chart your common ancestors as I do with our group of six cousins. That provides information and access to your matches' trees that I try to use to expand both our knowledge and accuracy in genealogy.
Even if you use another DNA company like 23 & Me, or FTDNA, your raw DNA data can be uploaded to Gedmatch.com which will provide you some interesting information. I can also walk you through that if you want. Just email me.
You may recognize Gedmatch.com as the company that some DNA criminologists have used recently to solve some very cold cases. I have taken the stand that I won't opt into using DNA results that I manage for use by law enforcement. But the people I manage are kin to me, and I have opted in, so it's kind of a moot principle.
